We believe strongly, however, that by educating parents and other responsible adults, many incidents of sexual abuse can be prevented and children can be protected from the trauma and pain associated with abuse. Protecting children and lowering the risk of child sexual abuse are at the forefront of what we do.
Prevent Abuse in One-on-One Situations
More than 80 percent of sexual abuse cases happen in one-on-one situations. Most abusers exploit pre-existing relationships with victims and their families. Abusers are often teachers, priests and other clergy members, doctors and relatives.
There are things parents can do to keep children safe when they spend time alone with other adults:
- Ask the adult for specific details about what activities are planned and where they are going to take place, and make notes of the response
- Ensure that any one-on-one activities are observable by you or other adults
- Talk with the child afterwards and pay special attention to the child's mood and the specifics of what the child says about the activities
- Drop in unexpectedly when the child is alone with the adult
- Talk with the adult beforehand about your children and make them aware that you are educated about child sexual abuse
It is safer to avoid unnecessary one-on-one situations and to let your child participate in group situations whenever possible. Monitor your child's activities, especially their Internet use. Take note of any abnormal behavior and learn how to identify the warning signs of abuse. If you suspect that child sexual abuse has taken place, you also need to know how to report suspected abuse.
