Warning Signs of Child Sexual Abuse

Learn the Signs of Abuse and Stay Alert

If a child has been victimized, the signs of abuse can range from vague to obvious. By learning to recognize potential signs of abuse, you can act more quickly to protect a child from having to endure further abuse. These signs include physical and emotional signs as well as the child's actions and overall behavior.

Physical and Behavioral Warning Signs

Physical indications of sexual abuse, if present, need to be taken seriously. Physical signs include pain, rashes, discoloration and bleeding of genitals or other areas; persistent or recurring pain; and urinary tract infections. If these symptoms are present, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible and to determine if they have been caused by other medical conditions or if they are signs of abuse.

More common than physical signs after abuse are behavioral warning signs. These signs include:

  • Changes in eating habits
  • Withdrawal and depression
  • Unexplained anger
  • Adult-like sexual behaviors or language
  • New fears of certain people or places

These signs can vary depending on the age of the child. Older children and adolescents may exhibit self-injury, depression, inadequate personal hygiene, and drug and alcohol abuse.
